Saints Join Tigers At The Top

Round three saw all fourteen teams play across the same weekend for the first time this season as champions Wigan returned from Australia and Widnes had a week off due to Wigan's trip.

Thursday night saw the 'biblical' clash of the Devils and the Saints as Salford hosted St Helens but it proved to be a harsh lesson for the hosts as St Helens raced to a 0-38 win to dent Salford's 100% record. Wilkin and Walsh all scored in the first half with the latter converting both for a 12-0 lead but Salford were blown away in the second 40 as Saints ran in four converted tries with a double from Percival added to by efforts from Amor and Laffranchi as they ran riot against what some have described as experienced individuals rather than a team.

Friday night saw Catalans good home record smashed to pieces as Leeds hit seven tries in a 12-40 win but it was the hosts who struck first with Oldfield in for the try and Barthau converting for 6-0 with Moon, Delaney and Briscoe turning it round with Sinfield converting for a 6-18 halftime lead. Ablett and Hall (Sinfield convs) extended the lead to 6-28 but Baile (Barthau cov) narrowed the gap but to no avail as Sinfield scored and converted with Hall scoring a second to round off the win.

Castleford's perfect start continued with a 10-30 win against Hull KR but it was the hosts that led early on as Green went over for the opening try (Burns conv) but Cas fought back with a double from Owen and a Mariano effort (Sneyd 3 convs) for a 6-18 lead. Caro made it 10-18 at the break but Holmes (Sneyd conv) made it 10-24 with the win sealed by Owen completing his hat-trick (Sneyd conv) for 10-30.

Huddersfield blew a huge lead in round two and did so again away to Widnes but it was the Vikings who lead at half time, McGillvary and Cudjoe (Brough conv) made it 0-10 to Hudds with Hanbury and Clough going over and Tickle converting both for a 12-10 lead for the hosts. Crabtree added a third try as Brough kicked the conversion and two penalties for a 12-20 lead and hopefully lesson learned from the previous week. However, Mellor (Tickle conv) reduced the gap to 18-20 and Widnes secured the win as Hanbury scored his second and despite Tickle's missed kick they held on for a 22-20 win.

Sunday saw a trio of games and I begin with the battle of the bottom two as strugglers Bradford and London met at Odsal, Gale and Sidlow (Foster 2 convs) made it 12-0 with Minns (Drinkwater conv) making it 12-6 at the break but Bradford increased the gap through Addy (Foster conv) but Cunningham's try with Drinkwater converting made it 18-12. Gale kicked a drop goal with Olbison going over (Foster conv) to secure a 25-12 win and put them on -2 after their six point deduction.

Warington got their first win of the season at home to Hull but it was a narrow win for the Wolves despite leading 18-6 at half time, Ratchford scored and converted with Houghton (Crooks conv) levelling the score at 6-6. Waterhouse and Evans added tries with Ratchford converting the latter and adding a penalty before the break but Lineham reduced the gap to 18-10 with Crooks failing to convert and when Talanoa scored Hull's third try with Crooks converting it was his sole fail that saw Warrington hold on for a 18-16 win.

The third game of the afternoon saw a first win for Wigan against a tough Wakefield side with Manfredi's first senior try giving Wigan the lead with Lauitiiti's try (Sammut conv) putting the visitors in front but Wigan came back in style with Thornley's effort regaining the lead with O'Loughlin crossing twice with Hampshire and Bateman adding scores and Smith converting 3/6 for a 30-6 lead.

Kirmond (Sammut conv) reduced the gap just before the break with a well worked try by Fox (Sammut conv) making it 30-18 but Flower (Smith conv) and a full length stunner from Burgess made it 40-18 and Mathers sin-binning after taking out Hampshire dented Wakefield's hopes of a comeback with Wigan using the extra man advantage as Farrell (Smith conv) made it 46-18 but Wakefield had the last say as Lyne intercepted and ran the length of the field for a fine try and Sammut ended with a perfect kicking record as Wigan won 46-24.
