CHASE SEALS SALFORD
REVENGE
After defeat to Hull in the league a week ago, Salford gained revenge in a 36-37 victory via golden point.
Arundel's try and Crooks conversion put Hull in front but a two tries in three minutes from Salford turned it around as Meli and Chase scored with Mullaney converting both for a 6-12 lead.
Arundel hit a second but Crooks' miss meant a 10-12 score with Meli increasing the visitors lead with his second on the half-hour with Mullaney's kick making it 10-18. Shaul scored just before the interval and Crooks kicked to reduce the gap to 16-18.
Talanoa's try and Crooks third conversion put Hull 22-18 in front in the 43rd minute and they went further in front ten minutes later through Rankin and Crooks kicked for a 28-18 lead.
Tries from Fages and Sa'u (Mullaney 2 convs) came either side of Shaul's second (Crooks conv) to make it 34-30 but a Crooks penalty put Hull six clear in the 74th minute only for Meli to complete his hat-trick and Mullaney converted in the final seconds for 36 all.
Salford triumphed in the eight minute of extra time via a superb drop goal from Chase to seal a fifth round place. My prediction 26-28 was close as was the two point margin.
LONDON EXTEND WINLESS RUN
London are still to win in 2014 after they lost 40-24 to Catalan with the hosts leading 16-0 inside 25 minutes with tries from Pryce, Anderson and Bosc with the latter converting two from three.
Solomona scored for London and Drinkwater's conversion made it 16-6 at the interval but Catalan had the win sealed by the hour mark as Millard and Maria crossed with Anderson claiming his second try with Bosc converting all three for a 34-6 lead.
London came back with two scores from Caton-Brown and Macani, both converted by Drinkwater for 34-18 but two minutes later Escare and Bosc's sixth conversion put Catalan to 40 points with London having the last say as Slyney scored in the final minute and Drinkwater made it four from four with the boot for a 40-24 final score. Expected a Catalan win but by 12 points at 30-18 so fairly close.
WARRIORS THRASH DOGGED RAMS
Wigan breezed through to the fifth round with a 6-58 win at Dewsbury but until the 50th minute it was a close game.
Wigan raced into a 0-12 lead inside ten minutes as Burgess struck twice with Smith successfully converting from long range but from there both defences were impenetrable into the half-time break.
Dewsbury pulled it back to 6-12 five minutes after the interval with a Morton try successfully being converted by Hemingway but five minutes later, Wigan extended the lead as Burgess completed his hat-trick for 6-16.
The Warriors then ran riot with Sarginson and Thornley crossing either side of Burgess' fourth with Smith converting all three before scoring a try himself and converting for 6-40.
Williams scored in the 73rd minute and converted his own try with Thornley’s second try bringing up the 50 mark with Williams converting for a second time and the rout ended in the final minute as Green capped off a fine performance with a try and Williams kicked successfully for a 6-58 final score. The most accurate prediction of the week as I expected 6-60 and came so close.
SKOLARS CRUSHED BY EAGLES
Sheffield eased into the fifth round with a 70-28 win over London racing into a 18-0 lead inside 23 minutes with scored from Knowles,Taulapapa and Davey all converted by Brambani.
The visitors scored twice through Davies and Robinson (Bradley 2 convs) either side of a Blagbrough try (Brambani conv) to make it 24-12 and Sheffield went in 30-12 at the break with Brambani converting after Laulu-Togagae's try.
Tagaloa and Blagbrough's second (Brambani conv) pushed them to 40 points but a double from Smith for the visitors (Bradley 2 convs) closed the gap either side of Laulu-Togagae's second (Brambani conv) for 46-24.
Burke and Walker crossed with Brambani converting for 58-24 with London again coming back with an O'Connor try but Blagbrough completed his hat-trick and Garside scored the Eagles 12th try with Brambani reaching a personal tally of 22 points with 11/12 from the boot.
SAINTS CLAIM NARROW WIN
The tie of the weekend saw St Helens seal a late but controversial 16-17 win at Huddersfield with tries from Swift and Makinson putting the visitors 0-8 in front inside 15 minutes.
Lunt and Wardle scored for the hosts with Brough converting the latter for a 10-8 lead at the interval. Lunt put the Giants further ahead with his second just before the hour and Brough converted for 16-8 but they went down to 12 men when Ferres was dismissed in the 65th minute for a dangerous tackle on Lomax.
Makinson claimed his second try and Walsh converted for 16-14 in the 67th minute but Walsh made it 16 all with five minutes to go with a penalty but it was the final minutes that will be the main talking point.
Brough kicked a drop goal only to have it strangely denied during his celebrations and the frustration was made worse when Walsh hit a crucial drop goal for Saints only for Huddersfield to be denied a penalty at the hooter that surely would have won them the game. Another as I expected a six point win for Saints.
CASTLEFORD ROAR AT BATLEY
Castleford defeated Championship side Batley with a 10-48 victory that saw them go 0-12 up inside 20 minutes with scores from Dorn and Carney converted by Sneyd.
Patterson converted a try from Griffin to reduce the deficit to 6-12 which continued into the interval but Cas extended the lead as Carney crossed for his second try for 6-16 with Dorn adding his second for a 6-20 lead just before the hour.
Ellis and Sneyd scored in the space of three minutes including a penalty and conversion for the latter to make it 6-32 and the rout continued as Clare and Mariano added further scores with Sneyd converting for a personal tally of 16 points making it 6-48.
Batley had the last say as Patterson scored a last-gasp try to make it 10-48 but missed the conversion and meant my prediction of 12-44 was very close.
BULLS HAMMER OLDHAM
Bradford returned to winning ways with a comfortable 60-6 win over Oldham and raced into an 18-0 lead with Gale scoring twice either side of a Kearney try with Gale converting all three.
Hughes crossed for Oldham with Palfrey converting for 18-6 with Kear crossing just before the interval with Gale's fourth conversion making it 24-6.
O'Brien and Addy scored as Bradford extended the lead with Gale again converting as the lead became 36-6 and another double came just before the hour as Kear claimed his second after a Henry try (Gale conv) to reach the 50 point mark.
The win was completed by tries from Foster and Ferguson with Gale completing his hat-trick and converting for a tally of 28 points with my prediction of 50-12 coming close to perfection.
DONCASTER THRASH HEMEL STAGS
Doncaster hit 60 points in successive round in a 68-18 win over Hemel and they started stunningly with four tries inside 16 minutes from Waterman, Sanderson, Butterfield and Wilkinson with Sanderson kicking three conversions for a 22-0 lead.
Hemel struck three tries in nine minutes to make it 22-18 via Al-Zubaidi, Ingerfield and Hill with Swindells converting all three but that was all for the Stags as Doncaster extended their lead with tries from Emmett and Edwards before the interval with Sanderson's conversions putting them 34-18 in front.
Wilkinson crossed for his second try five minutes after the break with Sanderson converting for 40-18, the scoring spree slowed until the 66th minute when Spurr scored twice and Sanderson scored his second while converting all three to make it 58-18.
Doncaster rounded off with tries from Welham and Cooke with Sanderson taking his tally to 28 as ended only two points off the 70 mark and a long way from my prediction of 38-18 but 100% accuracy on Hemel's haul.
FEATHERSTONE DEMOLISH CRUSADERS
Featherstone cruised to an 66-0 win against the North Wales Crusaders to reach the fifth round and led 26-0 at the break with a double from Crossley and efforts from Mendeika, Cording and Kain with all but one converted by Moore.
Mendieka claimed his second only two minutes into the second period converted by Moore with further scores from Worthington, Cording and Dale before the hour with Moore converting the lot for 50-0.
The Crusaders defence seemed to improve as they lasted until the 70th minute before leaking three further tries from Sharp and Flanagan with Mendieka completing his hat-trick and Moore converting for a haul of 18 points ensuring the visitors suffered a nilling.
WIDNES COMEBACK AT HALIFAX
Widnes came back from 10-6 down at halftime to win 10-34 at Halifax with the hosts going in front with tries from Fieldhouse and Potts with Tyrer converting the former for 10-0.
Clarke got Widnes on the board and Tickle's conversion put them only four points behind at the interval with Brown scoring in the 50th minute and Tickle's conversion making it 10-12.
Flynn extended their lead just before the hour mark with Tickle continuing his success with the boot and Hulme crossed for the Viking's fourth try in the 63rd minute for a lead of 10-22.
'Fax's hopes of coming back were ended by a Joseph effort and Brown's second with Tickle's conversions sealing the 10-34 win. Another close prediction as I expected an 18 point win for Widnes.
WOLVES SEAL NARROW WIN
Warrington came from behind to win 24-28 away to Hull KR after the hosts had led 14-10 at half-time,
Tries from Cockayne and Walker both converted by Burns put Hull 12-0 up but Atkins (Bridge conv) and Monaghan crossed for Warrington either side of a Burns penalty for 14-10.
Evans completed the comeback with a 43rd minute try with Bridge's conversion putting them 14-16 in front but they fell behind when Gardner crossed eight minutes later at 18-16.
Atkins claimed his second try and Bridge converted to regain the lead at 18-22 and Asotasi extended the lead with eight minutes to go with Bridge kicking a fourth conversion for 18-28.
Rovers setup a tight finish when Caro crossed with four minute remaining and Burns converted for 24-28 but Warrington held on for the win. A close game but my gamble on Hull KR came close.
HUNSLET SHOCK WORKINGTON
Hunslet defied the odds to secure a 27-10 win over Workington and led 17-0 at the break after tries from Maun, Grimshaw and Mackay with Akaidere and Ansell converting with the latter kicking a last minute drop goal.
Carter crossed twice in reply for Workington either side of an Ansell penalty with Connor kicking 1/2 conversions for 19-10 but the win was sealed by two tries in the 70th minute by Maun who completed his hatrick and confirmed the Hawks would be in the fifth round. Another surprise as I expected a six point win for Workington.
KEIGHLEY TRIUMPH OVER BARROW
Keighley sealed a fifth round place with a 54-28 win over Championship rivals Barrow.
The hosts went in front with a try from Barnett which Jones converted but Barrow levelled four minute later through Grant and Mort's resulting conversion.
Barrow went 6-12 in front as Campbell crossed with Mort converting but they were pegged back by Lawton’s try for 10-12 with White's try and Jones' second conversion putting the Cougars 16-12 up.
The half ended with a Craven try for the hosts and a penalty from Mort for Barrow making it 20-14 at the interval.
Law extended Keighley's led with Jones converting but Barrow replied instantly through Dawson with Shaw converting for 26-20. A trio of efforts from March, Rawlins and Peltier converted by both Jones and the latter made it 42-20 putting the Cougars in control.
Campbell crossed for his second try for Barrow to reduce the deficit before Hesketh and Barnett's second try sealed the win with Jones kicking his fifth and sixth conversions but Barrow had the last say with Grant's second try making it 54-28. Another correct result but score wise I went for a 12 point win for Keighley.
LEIGH COMPLETE ROCHDALE DOUBLE
LEIGH made it two wins in the space of a week over Rochdale as they added a 22-28 win to their 34-22 league win.
Leigh led 0-18 after a double from Wilkes in the first ten minutes and an effort from Ridyard who also converted all three but Rochdale came back with two tries in a minute as Casey and English crossed with Crook kicking a conversion for 10-18 at half-time.
Brierley extended the lead in the 47th minute with Ridyard kicking his fourth conversion with McNally adding another try four minutes later for 10-28 but Case crossed and English claimed his second with Crook's double conversion making it 22-29 which it remained until the end as Leigh advanced into the fifth round. A closer game than I anticipated having predicted a 22 point win for Leigh.
SWINTON SNEAK PAST YORK
Swinton left it late to seal a 31-28 win over York but were behind after only two minutes to a try from Lee which Haynes converted for 0-6.
Hawkyard crossed and Peet converted for 6 all but York regained the lead through Paterson with Haynes kicking for 6-12, Swinton came back instantly with three quick tries from Hawkyard, Watkins and Peet with the latter kicking two out of three for a 22-12 half-time lead.
Hardcastle scored with Haynes' conversion making it 22-18 with York going in front four minutes later through Smith with Haynes making it four in a row from the boot for 22-28.
Atkin scored with Peet converting to level the score at 28 all with Peet edging Swinton in front in the 76th minute with a penalty before Atkin kicked a last minute drop goal to complete a 31-28 win. A close game ending as I predated with a one-pointer but I said a three point win so still pretty close.
RHINOS HUMILIATE WILDCATS
Last but by no means least was the all Super League tie between Wakefield and Yorkshire rivals Leeds but the 6-60 score means the Wildcats have scored 12 points against 104 in their last two games and at times looked very out of place.
Despite the high score, the first try only came after 18 minutes when Burrow crossed and Sinfield converted for 0-6.
Ablett and Hall struck twice with a McGuire try in between (Sinfield 3 convs) for a 0-32 lead but Wakefield avoided a nilling when Godinet crossed the try line and Sammut converted for 6-32 at the interval but the spree continued only five minutes into the second period when Achurch scored and Sinfield converted for a 32 point lead.
Wakefield were in danger of suffering a potential 60-70 point loss which seemed more likely when Sutcliffe crossed in the 50th minute with the conversion making it 6-44.
Wakefield kept Leeds out for 20 minutes but capitulated in the final ten minutes conceding three tries via Burrow, Briscoe and Moon with Sinfield taking his tally to 16 points and Leeds to 60. My worst predictions of the weekend as I gambled on a Wakefield one point win and instead saw a 54 point loss.
A superb weekend of games ended with a controversial draw that saw the '6' and '9' balls mixed up meaning Widnes travel to Salford and Bradford host Catalan rather than the French having the shorter trip to Widnes.
The stand out tie sees Leeds host St Helens while defending champions Wigan will host surprise winners Hunslet in a repeat of the 1965 final.
