Warriors Comeback Against Broncos

Ahead of a busy Easter double, Wigan hosted London with the visitors looking to claim their first win of 2014 while Wigan were looking for a fourth straight victory.

Wigan rested Matty Smith, Ben Flower and Liam Farrell with Sam Powell returning after an injury in pre-season on the bench meaning George Willams started in the halves. London stunned the home crowd with a perfect start inside two minutes as O'Callaghan went over for the opening try, Drinkwater missed the conversion but London led 0-4.

The lead increased six minutes later when a nice passage of play resulted in McMeeken crossing and this time Drinkwater converted successfully to put the visitors 0-10 in front and Wigan needed a quick response. Wigan did respond but two errors denied them the chance to score, Taylor knocked on from a good position and in the next set, Williams found Sarginson in space only for the winger to knock-on and gift possession to his former side.

Wigan got on the scoreboard in the 26th minute when a superb kick from Williams was collected out wide by Burgess who found former Bronco Tony Clubb who went over for the try, Williams kicked the conversion to make it 6-10. Wigan were level within five minutes as Green found Sarginson out wide who crossed for the try, Williams missed a tough conversion but Wigan were level at 10 all.

London would have been happy to be level at halfway but that hope ended in the 37th minute when a lovely solo run from Thornley saw him evade three Broncos defender before crossing for a try, Williams kicked successfully for a 16-10 lead at the interval.

Both sides had a mixed start to the second half with errors and penalties exchanged but Wigan came close to extending the lead in the 56th minute when Bowen went over the line but he was held up by the London defence. Wigan were awarded a penalty for interference and a quick tap from Clubb saw him cross for his second try against his former side and Williams continued his kicking success with the conversion for 22-10.

London's indiscipline cost them again as after a powerful run from Hughes, Wigan were awarded a penalty and a superb kick from Williams found Sarginson who scored his second try of the evening and despite Williams missing the conversion attempt, Wigan led 26-10.

London responded as Macani scored in the corner but Drinkwater's missed conversion left the gap at 12 points at 26-14 but with six minutes to go the comeback was still possible for the Broncos. However, Wigan ended any hopes of a draw as Thornley confirmed the win for Wigan with a nice try, Williams missed the conversion but the led was 30-14.

Fans from both sides began to exit with two minutes to go and they will wish they hadn't as Bowen repeated his heroics of the Catalan win with a full length dash that saw him score with ease under the sticks and an easy conversion from Williams made the final score 36-14 to Wigan leaving London with eight successive defeats. A case of what could have been for London with a brace for both of their former players as Wigan move into the top four.
