2021 Super League Round 11 Review

Round 11 saw another game falling to a COVID postponement (Hull KR V St Helens) while many sides fielded mixed line-ups due to clashing with the International game.

Dragons Delight As Tigers Tumble

The round opened on Thursday night with current leaders Catalans Dragons maintaining top spot with a 16-6 win over Castleford Tigers at the Mend-a-Hose Jungle. Trinity Triumph Over Weakened Warriors

Wigan Warriors' mixed form continued with a 14-6 loss to Wakefield Trinity at the Mobile Rocket Stadium. Trinity opened the scoring on 17 minutes with ex-Warriors back Ryan Hampshire crossing and Mason Lino converting for 6-0. Wakefield doubled the lead just before the interval with Matty Ashurst crossing and Lino kicking for 12-0 half-time advantage.

COVID CANCELS ROBINS V SAINTS

Sadly, the round saw the trend of cancellations continue as a case outbreak in the Hull Kingston Rovers squad forced the cancellation of their game against St Helens

Giants Gutted By FC Fightback

Friday's sole action saw Huddersfield Giants lose out 17-10 to Hull FC at the John Smith's Stadium. The Giants raced into a 10-0 lead with an Olly Ashall-Bott try which Oliver Russell converted before adding two penalty goals and the lead lasted into the interval.

Fiery Clash As Rhinos/Red Devils See Red

Leeds Rhinos returned to action with a 38-12 win over Salford Red Devils in an ill-tempered clash at the AJ Bell Stadium on Sunday. 2021 Women's Super League Round Six Review

After last week's round saw just one game surviving Covid/medical issues, round five should have become the first to have all ten teams playing with the final game being in the new Monday night spot.

St Helens Suffering Sees York Handed Win

However, one game suffered from an extension of last week's issues as St Helens Women were unable to field a team which meant York City Knights Ladies were given an automatic 24-0 win. This is due to the rules for sides unable to play but not posing enough of an issue cases wise with less than seven.

Wilson Double Sees Warriors Topple Tigers

The action began at Victoria Park as Wigan Warriors Women secured a first ever victory over Castleford Tigers Women with a 22-8 win. The Tigers opened the scoring with a Lacey Owen try inside six minutes for 4-0 before a self-converted try from Georgia Wilson put the Warriors 6-4 ahead. Rachel Thompson crossed for 10-4 before Hollie Dodd's try cut the gap to 10-8 into the interval.

Castleford were dealt a double blow within two minutes of the restart as Lucy Eastwood was sent to the sin-bin and seconds later, Carys Marsh crossed to extend Wigan's lead to 14-8. A second try for Wilson saw Wigan benefit from the 13 v 12 situation for a second time as they moved to an 18-8 advantage. The final say on the score line came before the hour as Emily Baggaley collected a pass to cross for 22-8. Strong defence from both sides meant no further scores as Wigan held on to extend their perfect start of four wins from four games in the WSL.

Bulls Beaten By Rallying Rhinos

The sole game at Mobile Rocket Stadium saw Bradford Bulls Women lose out 42-10 to Leeds Rhinos Women. Sadly updates were sparse with the scorers for Bradford not available at all online while Leeds simply listed theirs. Braces for Caitlin Beevers and Ellena Powell were joined by tries from Fran Goldthorp, Sophie Robinson, Zoe Hornby and Courtney Winfield-Hill who also converted seven times in the 42-10 victory.

Wolves Win Extends Wakefield Woes

Warrington Wolves Women sealed consecutive wins with a 52-14 win over Wakefield Trinity Ladies at Victoria Park. A strong first half from the Wolves saw 32-6 lead thanks to a hat-trick from Sammy Simpson, scores from Abigail Johnson, Amy Bennett and Michelle Davis who also added three goals with Claire Mullaney kicking one and  Wakefield's first half score came from Emma Kershaw with Lisa Taylor converting.

The second half saw Simpson claim her fourth try ahead of Brooke Price crossing for Trinity and then Mullaney crossed and converted before Olivia Whitehead crossed for Trinity with Brogan Evans and Dani Bound rounding off the win with Mullaney adding a third goal of the game for the 52-14 final score.

Billington Treble Halts Hudds

The round ended on Monday night with the new Twitch spot at Odsal Stadium as Featherstone Rovers Ladies came from behind to win 28-18 against Huddersfield Giants Women

Rovers struck first with Brogan Churm crossing inside seven minutes with Katie Hepworth converting for a 6-0 lead that would become 12-0 into the interval as Churm crossed for a second time with Hepworth converting

The second half saw Hudds get off the mark on 48 minutes as Bella Sykes crossed with Frankie Townend converting for 12-6 before the Giants staged a rapid turnaround with Bethan Oates scoring twice in four minutes and with Townend converting, they led 18-12. The scoreboard then belonged to Chloe Billington as she crossed and touched down for a 14 minute hat-trick which saw Hepworth add two conversions as the Rovers completed the 28-18 win.

2021 Super League Round Ten Review

After the last round saw two postponements, the trend continued in round ten with Leeds Rhinos' trip to face current leaders Catalans Dragons postponed due to an extension of the Rhinos' COVID issues. The round also saw five games across four days ranging from Wednesday-Saturday.

Tigers Triumphant At Trinity

The round opened on Wednesday as Castleford Tigers claimed an 18-12 win over city rivals Wakefield Trinity at the Mobile Rocket Stadium. The visitors struck first with George Griffin crossing and Danny Richardson converting for a 6-0 lead that was rapidly levelled at 6-6 by Jacob Miller's try and Mason Lino's conversion. Jordan Turner touched down to send the Tigers into the interval with a 10-6 advantage.

The advantage became 14-6 with Michael Shenton's try on 50 minutes before Peter Mata'utia looked to have sealed the win with a try on the hour for 18-6. Wakefield set up a frantic finish though as Miller claimed his second try and Lino converted for 18-12 which due to strong defence from the Tigers was how the match ended.

Saints Stunned By Winning Wolves

Thursday night saw the league's best attack face the best defence with St Helens' continuing to suffer the woes of facing Warrington Wolves who edged a 6-2 win. St Helens opened the scoring with a Lachlan Coote penalty for 2-0 on 13 minutes. Warrington replied on 24 minutes with a Ben Currie try which Gareth Widdop converted for 6-2. The score line remained until the end of the evening due to a mix of strong defence from both sides and mixed attacking with some errors.

Robins Ruin Warriors Homecoming

Friday night saw a wait of 467 days since the last attendance at the DW Stadium come to an end but sadly a losing return as Hull Kingston Rovers claimed an 18-8 win over Wigan Warriors. In front of around 6000 Warriors fans, the Robins struck first in a tight first half as Ben Crooks crossed and converted for a 6-0 advantage into the interval.

Ryan Hall extended the Robins' lead on the hour with Crooks converting for a 12-0 lead. Wigan finally got off the mark with an Oliver Gildart brace in the space of three minutes but failed conversions left them behind at 12-8. KR wrapped up the win five minutes from the end as Adam Quinlan crossed for 16-8 to confirm the Warriors fans would begin their return to home attending with a defeat.

Salford Success Halts Huddersfield

Friday's action continued with Salford Red Devils edging a 9-8 win over Huddersfield Giants at the John Smith's Stadium. Salford struck the opening score as Andy Ackers crossed and Declan Patton converted for a 6-0 lead inside 11 minutes. Hudds got off the mark with an Aidan Sezer penalty goal for 6-2 before Patton swept over a penalty goal to send the visitors into the interval with an 8-2 advantage.

Huddersfield drew level within eight minutes of the restart as Jake Wardle crossed for a try which Sezer converted for 8-8 but it was to be Salford who claimed the win courtesy of a drop goal from Chris Atkin for 9-8.

Hull FC Humble Luckless Leigh

The action resumed on Saturday afternoon as Leigh Centurions' wait for a first win continued in a 64-22 loss to Hull FC at Leigh Sports Village. A rapid start from FC saw Jake Connor cross for the opening score inside two minutes for 4-0 before James Bell replied for Leigh with Ryan Brierley converting for a 6-4 lead. Hull hit back through Adam Swift before Manu Ma'u touched down for 12-6. FC took control with Bureta Faraimo, Mahe Fonua and Andre Savelio all crossing and Swift claiming his second try with Marc Sneyd converting thrice for a 34-6 lead into the interval.

Connor Wynne extended the lead within a minute of the restart with Sneyd kicking for 40-6 but Leigh then hit back with a Ben Renyolds try for 40-10. FC resumed control with Jack Brown crossing ahead of a second Savelio score and with Sneyd converting both for 52-10. A self-converted score from Brierley cut the gap to 52-16 but again it was a only a blip in FC's spree with Chris Satae going in ahead of a hat-trick try from Savelio, Sneyd reaching eight successes with the boot for 64-16. Leigh had the final saw as Brierley crossed for his second try and converted for a 64-22 final score.

Catalans Charge Halted By Rhinos Covid Cases

The round was set to end with current leaders Catalans Dragons hosting Leeds Rhinos at Stade Gilbert Brutus on Saturday evening. After last week's tie against St Helens was cancelled due to an influx of Covid cases for the Rhinos, their woes continued and forced this clash to also be cancelled.

Wolves Women Win Halts Hudds Women

The only game to survive postponement saw Warrington Wolves Women claim their first WSL victory with a comfortable 44-8 win over Huddersfield Giants Women at Victoria Park.

Dodd claimed her second try for 8-4 before Kaitlin Varley crossed to give the Tigers a 12-4 lead into the interval.

York cut the gap with a try from another ex-Tiger in Rhiannion Marshall at 12-8 but Georgia Roche restored the two score lead with a try for 16-8. A self-converted score from Marshall cut the gap to 16-14 with Cas moving their lead up to six at 20-14 on 66 minutes with Lucy Eastwood's try, York though set-up a tight finish as Alisha Clayton crossed for 20-18 but the missed conversion allowed Cas to hold on for the 20-18 win.
