2021 Super League Round Eight Review

Ahead of a break for the Challenge Cup semi finals, Super League reached round eight with a few huge scores and the end of the last unbeaten record in the league.

Wire Rout Red Devils

The round opened on Thursday night as Warrington Wolves eased to a 62-18 win over Salford Red Devils at the AJ Bell Stadium. Warrington raced into an 18-0 lead inside 12 minutes after tries from Stefan Ratchford, Danny Walker & Toby King with Ratchford converting the lot. Ken Sio got Salford off the mark with Harvey Livett converting for 18-6 before Ratchford added a penalty goal for 20-6. A self-converted effort from Livett narrowed the gap to 20-12 before Jake Mamo crossed with Ratchford converting for a 26-12 lead at the interval.

Wire extended their lead within two minutes of the restart as Gareth Widdop crossed and Ratchford converted for 32-12 before Darcy Lussick touched down for the hosts, Livett converting for 32-18. The Wolves took control from there with Mamo and King registering second scores ahead of efforts from Chris Hill and Ben Currie with Ratchford converting the lot before improving Widdop's second score late on for a huge 11 successes with the boot in the 62-18 victory.

Rampant Rhinos Trounce Tigers

Friday's action began with Leeds Rhinos hammering Castleford Tigers in a 60-6 win at the Mend-a-Hose Jungle. The Tigers made a perfect start as Jordan Turner went over inside two minutes with Danny Richardson converting for 6-0 before the lead was cut to 6-4 after Tom Briscoe crossed for Leeds. The Rhinos went ahead with Jack Broadbent's try which Rhyse Martin converted for 10-6 and Martin went on to improve a Kruise Leeming brace and Luke Briscoe score with a first miss coming after Richie Myler's try and it all led to a 32-6 lead into the interval.

A superb chip and collect from Konrad Hurrell saw Martin convert for 38-6 before the hour mark with Brad Dwyer and Morgan Gannon crossing for tries which Martin improved to bring up the half century at 50-6 before a second score from Tom Briscoe and Luke Gale score against his former club saw Martin convert only the latter to complete the massive 60-6 rout.

Welsby Treble Sees Saints Past FC

St Helens returned to winning ways with a 34-16 win over Hull FC at the Totally Wicked Stadium. A rapid start from the Saints saw them race into a 10-0 lead with a Jack Welsby try converted by Lachlan Coote who scored a try of his own minutes later. Hull got off the mark through ex-Saint Adam Swift for 10-4 before Morgan Knowles crossed for the hosts with Coote converting for 16-4. Coote added a penalty goal for 18-4 before Welsby scored his second try for a 22-4 lead into the interval.

Welsby completed his hat-trick on 47 minutes with Coote kicking for 28-4 before a Mahe Fonua brace sandwiched an effort from Joe Batchelor for the hosts with Coote and Marc Sneyd converting for a 34-16 final score.

Dragons Demolish Woeful Warriors

Saturday evening saw the final unbeaten start come to a halt as Wigan Warriors suffered a 48-0 hammering by Catalans Dragons at the Stade Gilbert Brutus. The first half saw the Warriors haunted by former stars as Micky McIlorum crossed for a try ahead of a Sam Tomkins brace with James Maloney converting twice for 16-0 into the interval.

Maloney extended the lead with a penalty goal before improving efforts from Arthur Mourgue and Josh Drinkwater (2) for 36-0 on the hour mark. Any Wigan hopes were ended just after the hour with Mike McMeeken crossing and Maloney converting for 42-0. The final five minutes saw Catalans round off the win with Mathieu Laguerre crossing and Maloney kicking an eighth success with the boot for a 48-0 final score but the game itself has one last incident as Wigan's Zak Hardaker was sent off after a fracas with the Tomkins brothers.

Robins Crush Centurions

Sunday afternoon saw Leigh Centurions' wait for a first win continue after a 30-16 loss to Hull Kingston Rovers at Hull College Craven Park. The Robins opened up an 8-0 lead with tries from Kane Linnett and Ryan Hall before Ben Hellewell crossed for Leigh with Ben Renyolds converting for 8-6. The sides exchanged tries again with Greg Minikin crossing for the hosts and Ryan Brierley for Leigh with Renyolds' conversion levelling at 12-12. The Robins went into the interval ahead after Linnett claimed his second score with Jordan Abdull converting for 18-12.

The second half saw KR continue their lead with Rowan Milnes crossing with Abdull converting for 24-12 before he improved a Dean Hadley try and second score from Hall for a 30-12 lead. Leigh ended the spree with a second score from Hellewell for 36-16 but the last say went to the hosts with Hall wrapping up his hat-trick for a 40-16 final score.

Trinity Triumph Over Giants

The final clash of the round saw Wakefield Trinity claim a 38-12 win over Huddersfield Giants at the Mobile Rocket Stadium. Trinity struck first with Liam Kay crossing inside six minutes and Mason Lino converting for 6-0. They went on to dominate the first half with tries from Kelepi Tanginoa, Jay Pitts, Joe Westerman and Bill Tupou with Lino converting the lot for a huge 30-0 advantage into the interval.

The second half saw Kay claim his second try of the afternoon before Lino got in on the try scoring for 38-0 with seven minutes to go. Huddersfield finally got off the mark with two scores in the final three minutes as James Gavet and Jake Wardle both touched down with Aidan Sezer converting both to make the final score closer at 38-12.
