After Round 19 saw a rare full schedule, Round 20 also known as Rivals Round, saw the issues return with a COVID postponement for Warrington Wolves v Catalans Dragons.
Wolves/Dragons Dismay At Covid Postponement
Thursday's round opener was postponed earlier that day as Catalans Dragons suffered COVID issues which prevented them travelling to face Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Rhinos Derby Delight Against Giants
Thursday's action began with Leeds Rhinos edging an 18-12 win over Huddersfield Giants at Emerald Headingley Stadium. The hosts struck first with Ash Handley crossing for 4-0 before Will Pryce crossed for the visitors to level at 4-4. Leeds led 10-4 into the interval though as Richie Myler touched down and Handley converted.
Leeds extended the lead with two Harry Newman penalty goals for 14-4 before Rob Lui crossed to make it 18-4 on the hour mark. Hudds mounted a comeback with Sam Wood and Kyle Trout both crossing late on to set-up a frantic finish but Leeds held on for the 18-12 win.
Saints Stroll Past Woeful Warriors
Friday night saw St Helens ease to a 26-2 derby win over Wigan Warriors in an ill-tempered battle at the DW Stadium. Saints struck first with a Regan Grace score which Lachlan Coote converted for 6-0 before both sides were reduced to 12 with the sin-binning of James Bentley and John Bateman. Wigan cut the gap as Harry Smith kicked a penalty for 2-6 with Saints going into the interval with a 12-2 lead after Lewis Dodd touched down and Coote converted.
Dodd increased the lead further with a penalty goal for 14-2 before a double blow for Wigan saw both Bateman and Isa sent to the sin-bin a few minutes apart with Saints capitalising on the man advantage as Mark Percival crossed for 18-2. The win was wrapped up late on with a Coote penalty goal and Alex Walmsley try which Coote converted for a 26-2 final score.
Robins Rue As FC Edge Hull Derby
Saturday afternoon saw a tightly contested Hull derby with Hull FC edging a narrow 23-22 win over city rivals Hull Kingston Rovers. FC opened the scoring through Adam Swift for 4-0 before Jimmy Keinhorst levelled at 4-4. KR went ahead with a Rowan Milnes try which Ben Crooks converted for 10-4 before a Bureta Faraimo try saw Marc Sneyd convert to level at 10-10. FC regained the lead ahead of the interval with Carlos Tuimavave crossing and Sneyd converting for 16-10.
A self-converted score from Crooks levelled up at 16-16 before Faraimo claimed his second try for a 20-16 lead. Sneyd extended the lead with a penalty goal and drop goal for a 23-16 with KR setting up a frantic finish with Albert Vete crossing and Crooks converting but FC held on to seal the 23-22 win.
Tigers Triumph Over Trinity
Castleford Tigers extended their streak over city rivals Wakefield Trinity with a 23-18 win at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle. Cas raced into a 12-0 lead after Greg Eden and Oliver Holmes crossed with Danny Richardson converting twice. Wakefield cut the gap to 12-6 with a Tinirau Arona effort which Mason Lino converted before Richardson added a penalty goal for 14-6. The lead became 19-6 at the interval after a Derrell Olpherts try and Richardson drop goal.
The Tigers were in full control after the restart with a second try from Eden extending the lead to 23-6 but they were pegged back after the hour mark as Tom Johnstone touched down with Lino converting before he improved a try from Lee Kershaw late on as Cas held on for the 23-18 win.
Centurions Celebrate In Red Devils Defeat
Leigh Centurions finally got their first win of the season at the 17th attempt with a 32-22 victory over Salford Red Devils at Leigh Sports Village. The visitors struck first with Rhys Williams crossing for 4-0 inside two minutes before Joe Mellor levelled for Leigh with Craig Mullen converting for a 6-4 lead. The advantage increased with Keenan Brand touching down for 10-4 with Mullen adding a penalty goal for 12-4. Salford cut the gap with a Harvey Livett score for 12-8 with both sides exchanging penalty goals through Mullen and Krisnan Inu for 14-10 into the interval.
Inu improved a Ken Sio try for 16-14 just after the interval before Mullen added a trilogy of penalty goals either side of the hour mark to push the lead to 20-16 before he improved a Liam Hood score for 26-16 with five minutes remaining, the long awaited victory was confirmed on 78 minutes as Adam Sidlow crossed and Mullen converted for 32-16. Salford had the last say on the score though with Sio claiming his second score which Inu converted for a 32-22 final score.
