After a shortened format for 2021 due to the pandemic, the Challenge Cup Final took place this weekend as the first in July since the planned move from the traditional August date.
Saints Seal Cup Success Against Tigers
St Helens ended a wait of 13 years to win their 13th Challenge Cup as they sealed a 26-12 win over Castleford Tigers at Wembley Stadium. The Saints struck first with Theo Fages crossing and Lachlan Coote converting for 6-0 before Cas hit back through Niall Evalds with Gareth O'Brien kicking to level at 6-6. The Tigers went into the interval ahead after a Jake Trueman try saw O'Brien kicking them into a 12-6 lead.
Saints levelled within a minute of the restart as James Roby went in and Coote converted to draw level at 12-12. They went ahead on 52 minutes as Tommy Makinson crossed for 16-12 before two penalty goals from Coote after the hour mark looked to seal the win at 20-12. The win and the trophy were sealed late on as Kyle Amor dived over and Coote converted for 26-12.
