2021 Super League Round 13 Review Part Two

Round 13 seems to truly be an unlucky one as this is the second review after one tie was played in early June as Wakefield Trinity defeated Leigh Centurions in a 30-20 success - WAK - LEI https://ssentrl.blogspot.com/2021/06/2021-super-league-round-13-part-one.html

There will potentially as many as four reviews of this round as only two games survived this week, two others were postponed due to COVID issues while the final clash was deemed a 24-0 win due to Huddersfield Giants being unable to field a team against Castleford Tigers.

Saints Stroll Past Weakened Warriors

The round resumed on Sunday night with St Helens taking the derby spoils with a 24-6 win over Wigan Warriors at the Totally Wicked Stadium. The hosts opened the scoring with a Lachlan Coote penalty goal for 2-0 before he converted an effort from Regan Grace to make it 8-0. Coote added another penalty goal for 10-0 before scoring a self-converted try for 16-0. He added another penalty goal for an 18-0 lead and a miserable half for the visiting Warriors got worse with the sinbinning of Kai Pearce-Paul just before the interval.

Wigan were reduced to 11 with the sinbinning of Willie Isa four minutes after the restart with Saints using the advantage to got 24-0 ahead with Mark Percival crossing and Coote converting for a sixth time. The Warriors avoided a nilling with Liam Farrell diving over and Harry Smith converting for 24-6 before the hour mark but it proved to be the final score of the evening as Saints held on for the 24-6 victory.

Robins COVID Woes Halt Catalans Charge

Catalans Dragons remain in top spot despite sitting out in this round due to a postponement as opponents Hull Kingston Rovers continued to deal with the COVID crisis.

Hull FC Hopes Hindered By Red Devils COVID Woes

Alike their city rivals, Hull FC also sat the round out as their opponents Salford Red Devils continued to deal with the COVID crisis.

Rallying Rhinos Ruin Wire Winning Streak

The final action of the round this week saw Leeds Rhinos continue their good form with a 22-16 win over Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. The Rhinos struck inside seven minutes as Rob Lui crossed and Rhyse Martin converted for a 6-0 lead that lasted nine minutes before Danny Walker touched down for the hosts and Stefan Ratchford levelled at 6-6 with the boot. Alex Mellor restored the lead for Leeds with a try which Martin improved for 12-6 before he converted an Ash Handley score and added a penalty goal to set up a 20-6 half-time advantage.

Martin extended the lead with another penalty goal five minutes after the restart for 22-6 and the score remained the same until the final ten minutes when Warrington attempted a comeback with a Josh Charnley brace which saw Ratchford add a conversion to cut the gap to 22-16 but Leeds held on doing so with 11 men after the two late sin-binning's of Lui and Liam Sutcliffe.

Giants Gutted As Cas Claim Walkover Win

The action should have come to an end on Tuesday night but recent COVID woes coupled with injuries left Huddersfield Giants unable to field a team and therefore falling foul of the forfeit rule which meant Castleford Tigers were given a 24-0 win.
