Another break from league action as the Challenge Cup returned at the quarter final stage with the prize for the winners being a trip to Elland Road on Saturday May 7th.
Robins Rise as Tigers Tumble Out
Hull Kingston Rovers sealed a semi-final spot with a comfortable 34-10 win over Castleford Tigers at Sewell Group Craven Park on the Friday night. The hosts opened up a 12-0 lead with a brace from Elliot Minchella which Lachlan Coote converted. A replying brace from Greg Eden saw Gareth O'Brien convert just the latter meaning KR lead 12-10 into the interval.
Ryan Hall crossed for KR to restore the one score lead before Rowan Milnes crossed and Coote converted for 22-10 just after the hour mark. The Robins wrapped up the win with Sam Wood and Jordan Abdull both crossing in the final ten minutes and Coote ending the evening with five conversion successes for a 34-10 final score.
Saints Slay Dragons
St Helens continued their pursuit of retaining the trophy with a 36-20 victory over Catalans Dragons at Stade Gilbert Brutus on Saturday afternoon. The visitors struck first with a Tommy Makinson penalty goal to lead 2-0 inside five minutes but were pegged back by a Fouad Yaha try for 4-2. Saints responded with three tries in six minutes from Jack Welsby, Lewis Dodd and Mark Percival with Makinson converting the lot to open up a 20-4 lead. Catalans cut the gap though with Gil Dudson touching down for a try which Arthur Morgue converted for 20-10 into the interval.
The two sides exchanged scores before the hour mark as Morgan Knowles (Makinson conv) crossed for 26-10 before Yaha (Morgue conv) claimed his second score of the afternoon to make it 26-16. Saints wrapped up win with further scores from Dan Norman and Joe Batchelor with Makinson converting once for 36-16 but the Dragons had the last say with a late try from Tom Davies for a 36-20 final score.
Huddersfield Giants secured a first semi-final spot for over a decade as they won 24-16 against Hull FC at the John Smith's Stadium. Hudds opened the scoring inside eight minutes as Ricky Leutele crossed and Tui Lolohea converted for 6-0 before adding a penalty goal for 8-0 on 19 minutes. Hull hit back with a Joe Lovodua try which Luke Gale converted for 8-6 but they would go into the interval 16-6 down after Chris McQueen touched down and Lolohea converted and added a penalty goal.
FC cut the gap to 16-12 within eight minutes of the restart as Andre Savelio went over and Gale converted but a self-converted try and another penalty goal from Lolohea sealed the win with a 24-12 lead on 73 minutes but FC did have final say as ex-Giants back Darnell McIntosh crossed for a late try for a 24-16 final score.
Field Treble Topples Trinity
Wigan Warriors eased into the semi-finals with a 36-6 win over Wakefield Trinity at the Be Well Support Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Wigan struck first with a dash over from Jai Field and Zak Hardaker converting for a 6-0 lead. Trinity replied through Lewis Murphy crossing on the wing and Max Jowitt levelling with the boot for 6-6. The Warriors regained the lead just before the break as Ethan Havard dived over and Hardaker converted for a 12-6 advantage into the interval.
Field claimed his second score of the afternoon within two minutes of the restart and Hardaker continued his success with the boot for 18-6 before going over himself and kicking for a 24-6 lead on 63 minutes. The win and a spot in the last four were wrapped up by a clever try from Liam Farrell (Hardaker conv) and hat-trick score in the final minute from Field which saw Hardaker end the afternoon with six perfects from the kicking tee for a 36-6 final score.
The semi final draw threw up two contrasting ties for the Elland Road triple header...
