After the break for the Challenge Cup, Super League action returned with round seven.
Wigan Warriors left it late to secure a 19-18 win over Hull FC at the DW Stadium on Thursday evening. The Warriors struck first with a Jai Field try inside four minutes for 4-0 before Zak Hardaker swept over a penalty goal for 6-0. Hull levelled with an Adam Swift try which Luke Gale converted for 6-6 before sending them into the interval with a 12-6 advantage after improving an effort from Danny Houghton.
Wigan levelled at 12-12 within seven minutes of the restart as Ethan Havard touched down and Hardaker converted but FC hit back with a Chris Satae try (Gale conv) for 18-12 but the sides were again level with 64 minutes on the clock as Field crossed for a second time and Hardaker kicked for 18-18. Recent meetings between the sides have been decided by Golden Point extra time and this looked to be the destination of the match until a drop goal attempt from Harry Smith sailed through the posts to seal the 19-18 win for the Warriors.
Giants Glory in Dragons Defeat
Huddersfield Giants continued their good form with a 28-12 win over Catalans Dragons at the John Smith's Stadium on Friday night. Catalans opened the scoring with a Samisoni Langi try inside four minutes which was matched by an Owen Trout score on 15 minutes which Oliver Russell converted for a 6-4 lead. Danny Levi crossed to extend the lead with Tui Lolohea converting for 12-4. Catalans hit back just before the break as Tom Davies went over to make it 12-8 into the interval.
Hudds regained a score lead with a Lolohea penalty goal within five minutes of the restart before he improved a try from Theo Fages for a 20-8 lead. Joe Chan went over to cut the gap to 20-12 but Hudds held on to wrap up the win with Josh Jones crossing with Lolohea converting before adding a late penalty goal for a 28-12 final score.
Castleford Tigers boosted their form with a 32-6 win over Toulouse Olympique at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle. The Tigers roared into a 20-0 lead inside the first half hour as Greg Eden, Niall Evalds and Adam Milner crossed with Gareth O'Brien converting the lot and adding a penalty goal and the lead lasted into the interval.
The spree resumed in the second half as Jake Mamo and Liam Watts both touched down before the hour mark with O'Brien converting twice for 32-0. The final say went to the visitors though as Tony Gigot crossed and Chris Hankinson converted for a final score of 32-6.
Super Saints Rout Rhinos
St Helens regained top spot with a comfortable 26-0 win over Leeds Rhinos at Headingley. An early blow for the Rhinos came inside five minutes as ex-Rhinos back Konrad Hurrell crossed for 4-0 before Tommy Makinson doubled the lead to 8-0 with a try and the lead remained into the interval.
Makinson crossed for his second of the evening with Mark Percival converting for a 14-0 lead that became 20-0 on the hour as Lewis Dodd crossed and Percival converted. The gloss on the win came on 71 minutes with Jonny Lomax touching down and Percival converting for a third time to seal the 26-0 victory.
Hull Kingston Rovers piled further pressure on Warrington Wolves with a 34-18 win at Sewell Group Craven Park. The Robins raced into a 20-0 lead with scores from Frankie Halton, Ryan Hall, Jimmy Keinhorst and Lachlan Coote who also added two conversions. Warrington got off the mark with a Peter Matautia score which Gareth Widdop converted for 20-6 and the score remained into the interval.
The hosts resumed control with a Mikey Lewis try which Coote converted before Jez Litten crossed for 30-6. Warrington remained in the contest though with a George Williams try and Widdop conversion to cut the gap to 30-12. KR wrapped up the win with a second try for Hall but the visitors had the final say with Josh Thewlis crossing and Widdop converting for a 34-18 final score.
Trinity Edge Past Red Devils
The round ended on Sunday as Wakefield Trinity sealed a 30-24 win over Salford Red Devils at the Be Well Support Stadium. Trinity struck first with a Jacob Miller try which Max Jowitt converted for 6-0 before Rhys Williams replied for Salford for 6-4. Wakefield restored the score lead with a Tom Johnstone effort which Jowitt converted before he improved a Reece Lyne try for 24-4 into the interval.
Salford cut the gap within six minutes of the restart as Deon Cross touched down with Marc Sneyd kicking for 24-10 and it began a slight comeback with Ken Sio crossing ahead of a second try for Williams for 24-18, Wakefield looked to have sealed the win with Jay Pitts' try which Jowitt converted for 30-24 but Salford set up a tense finish with a second Sio try and Sneyd conversion for 30-24 but the hosts held on for the win.
